General patient education, not a diagnosis or an individual treatment plan. A qualified clinician should assess your symptoms and advise you.
Different germs need different approaches
Not every infection needs an antibiotic. A clinician may request a sample to help identify the cause and guide treatment, especially when an infection is persistent or the initial plan needs review.
Infections can be caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites; antibiotics act against bacteria, not viruses.
A sample may be tested to identify a microorganism and help guide appropriate care.
Use treatment as prescribed
Use antibiotics only as prescribed; never share or save them for later.
Severe infection signs such as confusion, difficulty breathing, mottled skin or very little urine need emergency care.
Preparing for the next step
Ask how the sample should be collected and when the result should be reviewed. Tell the team about recent antibiotic use and allergies. Do not share antibiotics or use leftovers for a new illness. If symptoms worsen, seek advice instead of changing the drug or dose yourself.
Questions for your consultation
