Before an operation: a safer preparation checklist for patients

The right preparation depends on your operation, anaesthetic and health conditions. Clear instructions from your own surgical team should take priority over advice passed on from someone else’s experience.

General patient education, not a diagnosis or an individual treatment plan. A qualified clinician should assess your symptoms and advise you.

Understand your operation

The right preparation depends on your operation, anaesthetic and health conditions. Clear instructions from your own surgical team should take priority over advice passed on from someone else’s experience.

Confirm the purpose of surgery, alternatives, expected recovery and who to contact with concerns.

Share all medicines, allergies, supplements, health conditions and possible pregnancy with the surgical team.

Medicines, fasting and recovery

Follow only the individualized instructions provided for eating/drinking and medicines before surgery.

After discharge, seek urgent advice for worsening wound redness/pain, pus, fever or feeling seriously unwell.

Preparing for the next step

Bring a full medicine list, including non-prescription products, and ask which instructions apply before the operation. Confirm transport, support at home and follow-up arrangements. If instructions are unclear or you become unwell before surgery, contact the team rather than making your own changes.

Questions for your consultation

  • What are the benefits, risks and alternatives for me?
  • What preparation and discharge instructions should I follow?
