General patient education, not a diagnosis or an individual treatment plan. A qualified clinician should assess your symptoms and advise you.

Recognise time-critical symptoms

Severe symptoms can require immediate assessment even when the cause is uncertain. An appointment request or online message is not a suitable way to seek help for a life-threatening problem.

Sudden severe chest pressure, severe breathing difficulty, unresponsiveness or stroke-like symptoms warrant emergency services.

Stroke warning signs include sudden facial weakness, arm weakness or speech difficulty; time matters.

Serious infection and uncertainty

Confusion, slurred speech, breathing difficulty and very little urine during an infection can signal sepsis.

Use local emergency services for life-threatening symptoms; online information cannot safely rule out an emergency.

Preparing for the next step

Contact local emergency services for severe symptoms and follow their instructions. If you can do so without delaying care, bring a medicine list and essential medical details. Tell the team when symptoms began; do not wait for an online reply to decide whether to seek emergency help.

Questions for your consultation

  • After emergency assessment, which follow-up is needed?
  • What symptoms should prompt an immediate return?
