General patient education, not a diagnosis or an individual treatment plan. A qualified clinician should assess your symptoms and advise you.
Recognising hearing difficulties
Hearing difficulties can affect conversations, work and school. A sudden change should not be assumed to be wax or a minor blockage without prompt medical advice.
Hearing loss may develop gradually and may show as difficulty following conversation or needing repetition.
Sudden hearing loss, especially with vertigo or tinnitus, needs urgent medical assessment.
Sudden hearing loss needs attention
Hearing problems in children may affect speech development and school progress.
Avoid inserting objects into the ear; arrange assessment rather than assuming wax is the cause.
Preparing for the next step
Write down whether the change affects one or both ears and whether there is pain, ringing or dizziness. Tell the clinician about recent infections, loud noise exposure and medicines. Do not put cotton buds or other objects inside the ear to try to find the cause.
Questions for your consultation
- Do I need a hearing test or an ear examination?
- What treatment and follow-up fit the cause of my hearing change?
