Common urinary symptoms

Burning or frequent urination can have several causes. Blood in urine, fever or pain around the back and side should not be dismissed as a minor problem without medical advice.

UTIs can cause burning, urgency/frequency, cloudy urine, lower abdominal/back pain and sometimes blood in urine.

Fever/shivering, back or side pain, vomiting, blood in urine or not urinating all day can require urgent assessment for possible kidney infection.

Signs needing prompt attention

Blood in urine should not be ignored even if it happens once; seek medical assessment.

Record symptom onset, urine changes and associated fever/pain to help clinicians assess the problem.

Preparing for the next step

Record when symptoms started, whether you have fever, and any change in urine colour or ability to pass urine. Mention pregnancy, previous urinary problems and recent antibiotics. Avoid using leftover medicines; the appropriate investigation and treatment depend on the cause.
