General patient education, not a diagnosis or an individual treatment plan. A qualified clinician should assess your symptoms and advise you.
Recognising jaundice
Jaundice is a sign, not a diagnosis. New yellowing of the eyes or skin deserves medical assessment even when there is little pain or the person otherwise feels well.
Yellow skin or whites of the eyes can indicate jaundice and may have serious causes.
Dark urine, pale stools and itchy skin can accompany jaundice.
Do not guess the cause
New yellowing of skin or eyes should be assessed urgently; do not wait for pain to appear.
Causes vary, so clinical evaluation is needed rather than self-diagnosis.
Preparing for the next step
Note when yellowing began and whether urine or stool colour has changed. Bring details of medicines, supplements and alcohol use. Avoid assuming that a particular food or home remedy will resolve the cause; investigation depends on the examination and the rest of your symptoms.
Questions for your consultation
- What tests may identify the cause of jaundice?
- Are any medicines or activities unsafe while I am being assessed?
